Tharwa Bridge at Tharwa in the ACT is a four span Allan truss bridge which provides a high-level crossing point across the Murrumbidgee River, allowing traffic between Canberra and Tharwa village. It is the oldest surviving bridge in the Australian Capital Territory. Bridge restoration works were carried out by RTA, more than $26 million has been spent restoring the Murrumbidgee River crossing.
The bridge was deemed unsafe for traffic and closed in 2006. In 2008, the ACT Government scrapped plans to build a new bridge, instead deciding to repair the existing structure built in 1895. In May 2011, the new 108 metre long and 100 tonne timber deck was installed and has now been tied into the rest of the bridge structure.
RTA used Coffs Harbour Hardwoods to supply the timber for this bridge, as one if its regular suppliers the RTA knew it could rely on CHH for providing quality timber for a job of this magnitude.
